Projects


One of the things that attracted me initially to the Information and Learning Technologies (ILT) Program at the University of Colorado, Denver was the fact that learning is assessed through the completion of projects rather than through testing. Seems pretty logical that if you can make something, you must have  learned how to make it.  As a result, I've created this page to display some of the projects I completed.


iBT TOEFL Tutorial Speaking:Tutorials and Practice Educational Website

This educational website is the cumulative project for the first three classes in CU Denver's Designing eLearning Environments certificate program. My project, titled ibt toefl speaking: tutorials and practice was designed for Korean students who are preparing for the Speaking portion of their iBT TOEFL test.

This project began with the EdWeb Proposal document which had me perform an analysis of instructional need, desired outcomes, the learners, the content, and the instructional environment/context. This analysis helped me determine the best learning solution based on these needs. This document is provided in printable form on the portfolio.

Educational Website: Design Documentation


Instructional Comic: iBT TOEFL speaking

This project was one that was created to supplement a presentation I do for my students studying for the speaking portion of the iBT TOEFL test.  What you'll see below is a printable handout that is givin to my learners as a way to summarize what they've heard in a classroom presentation discussing question one of the speaking section.  The majority of the work was done using the web tool, Pixton but also required the use of tools such as the screen capture tool, Jing, MS Word, and of course, Scribd, which allows me to present it in a printable form below.  The design document for the project are also listed below.

Professional Profile: Interview with Joshua Davies, Yonsei University

This was a fantastic project that allowed me the opportunity to interview a professional who is currently using elearning as part of his curriculum.  I chose to interview Joshua Davies, a university professor at coveted Yonsei University, in Seoul, Korea.  The interview lasted approximately an hour but the learning that coincided with speaking to Joshua and in creating the project you see below will last forever.  The design document of this project is in the form of a reflection, and is contained within the presentation.  This project was done using the tool Skype, which is where the interview was conducted, Pamela, which allows you to record Skype calls, and Prezi, which serves as the presentation tool you see below. Trend Analysis: Social Media in Education

For this project, I worked with a team that included Jesse Elam, Breana Johnson, and Jennie Liesge.  Having observed, researched and done a full trend analysis on the use of social networking in education, we published our findings on a website. Action Research Paper: Researching the effect on Motivation and English Skill Improvement when Implementing Project-Based Learning with Web 2.0 Tools Online for use in a Korean University EFL Setting

Creating a Corresponding Ning Network

This was by far,  the most challenging and comprehensive of all of the projects that I was required to put together for this course.  The document below is the culmination of an entire semester's work, and in completing it, I am now proficient  in creating research questions and methods of conducing research, evaluating participants, collecting and analyzing data, and providing a schedule for continued action. For this project, I was fortunate enough to work with Jesse Elam, a classmate of mine who was instrumental in every phase of the research, from teaching my students, to working tirelessly in completing the research. The focus of the research was on PaiChai University Tourism students, whom I proctored face-to- face, in class, once a week on the Paichai campus. The research itself was done entirely online, as Jesse and I facilitated online discussions, assigned projects, and provided feedback to students within a Ning network. This was an incredible learning experience, and one that helped prepare me for continued research both in completing my Masters degree and in the field of EFL at the university level.  Directly below is a short video tour of the Ning network that Jesse and I created and worked in with the students. Hongik University ESP Course Proposal: Creating a Professional Online Portfolio

This is a proposal I wrote to teach a blended elearning course at Hongik University in Jochiwon, Korea.  The proposal is currently being evaluated by the administration at the university. Completing this piece of writing further enhanced my research skills, while also improving my ability to see the big picture of the need for, application of, and impact that elearning has on learners and schools. As such, this paper served as a culmination of sorts, of what I have gained in my studies at the University of Colorado, Denver. Specifically, I know have a better sense of the steps required to implement elearning into any curriculum, including the know how to design and develop content, request any administrative support needed, assess any technical requirements, utilize a Learning Management System (LMS), create a budget, prepare a time line for things to be implemented, plan a set of guidelines to manage everything including the students, teachers, and assessment of program, market the program, and provide ongoing support for all stakeholders. 

Creating an Instructional Music Video: Marketing the Portfolio Class at Hongik

In the Hongik University proposal, one of the strategies I proposed to market the course, was to create an instructional music video. This project was one that required me to create something instructional rather than simply informational.  This is an important difference in the world of instructional design, as creating learning objectives and following a structure that helps viewers learn something is quite a bit different than just creating something that looks and sounds good. While this is no masterpiece by any means, it does offer instructional value to the viewer. Designing an EFL Curriculum for use in the Korean University: A Communicative Language Teaching Approach

This is a paper I wrote in an upper-division, graduate course in second language acquisition. It is both theoretical and practical in nature, and includes an abbreviated literature review on Communicative Language Teaching, and a corresponding syllabus and lesson plans. The completion of this document was instrumental in developing my philosophies and teaching approach as an EFL instructor and instructional designer.
